Shackelwell Nights: Hidden Dining in Dalston
Thanks to the power of twitter, Alex and I were fortunate enough to get some tickets to Shacklewell Nights opening night.  The night/place/event/secret-supper-club/pop-up-restaurant/hidden-dining-experience is essentially a great use of an empty space to get lots of people together and cook for them. It’s a project from Claire Roberson of Green Onions Supper Club and Jonathan Woolway of St...

Sound map: the Caledonian Road
Oral historian and sometimes shop fronter, Alan Dein, co-created this great sound and pictures map with the Guardian, looking into the life of the Cally Road. It’s a really fascinating slice of local london, have a look/listen.

Tesco Planning Letter?
Tesco (or possibly someone else) is planning to make deliveries at midnight on Lower Clapton Road. Full details of this and an application to make deliveries on a public highway (that is likely to be at the bus stop outside) are here and here. You can object online by clicking on the “Application Documents”, if you prefer standard mail, Caroline Ozor seems to be the person to write...

Are Tesco moving in on Lower Clapton Road?
I recently tweeted about Tesco moving into Lower Clapton Road. It was some speculation on my part based on a letter, but there was a fair bit on interest from some locals, so I will elaborate. I live in a block of flats owned by a housing association. As part of the estate there is a commercial unit (144-146), this unit has been empty since the block was built in 2006, the only real bid for...

Will Govus is one of my favourite Photographers and sickeningly talented for someone so young. His night photos are stunning, and the rest of his photos have fantastic documentary feel about them. Hin Chua: After the Fall
I’m a big fan of photos that focus on the man made rather than pictures of people, these photos by Hin Chua have an eeriness about them that nods to some kind of post-apocalyptic world, well one that didn’t include a big explosion. Enjoy. More works at www.hinius.net (via booooooom)

Matthew Albanese: Strange Worlds
Matthew Albanese makes amazing miniature landscapes through a variety of use of materials and photographic techniques. I love the idea that you can have worlds all in one studio and the painstaking detail that’s gone into these. Paprika Mars. Made out of 12 pounds paprika, cinnamon, nutmeg, chili powder and charcoal Aurora Borealis. This one was made by photographing a beam of colored...

Blogs I like: Snapshot London
Alex Pink takes rather good photos of things in London often the neglected bits that we generally overlook, old pubs or well composed street views and there are a smattering of shop fronts, which in my view is always a good thing. This is real London. See more at:www.snapshotlondon.co.uk

Flickr Organizer: "Delete" illustration
Flickr has a really odd function hidden away in the organiser which harks back to 90s webdesign and clip art. When you delete a photo from a set you get a mushroom cloud. Is this something left behind from the early days of flickr or an in-joke added in recently. Does anyone know?

Rant: "Oh you want credit for your photos?"
I’m a bit pissed off (those that know me won’t be suprised by this), I’ve just found my photos being used again without the right permissions. Photographers are treated terribly mostly by big corporations who have enough legal know-how to know better. Who cares that you spent time and effort building up a collection of photos, they just seem to think it’s ok to raid it. I...

The White Balance Lens Cap
I’m a bit lazy when it comes to manual settings when taking photos, once upon a time I had a fully manual camera, no in-built light meter or anything; now I generally leave it to what my camera tells me. So something like the White Balance Lens Cap is perfect for getting someone like me to think a bit more about image control. It involves simply taking a photo with the lens cap to get your...

I'm a Photographer not a Terrorist
There are a lot of stories flying around at the moment about photographers being mistreated under abuse of section 44 of the Terrorism Act, this is making a lot of people angry and if you (like myself and anyone with a mobile phone) take photos in public places this could affect you. I’m a Photographer not a Terrorist is one of the organisations trying to put a stop to this by raising...

Hungry House: Possibly the Nicest Customer Service...
The other day I went to the Hungry House website to find/order/pay for dinner. About half an hour later I got this email back: Hi Emily, Thanks so much for getting in touch with hungryhouse and I’m so sorry to hear that you seemed to be having problems with...
