Dieter Rams @ The Design Museum

Dieter Rams

I went to see the Dieter Rams show @ Design Museum today and it was good.

Its a great collection of products from his time at Braun and furniture manufacturer Vitsœ, this is the design that we have had in our homes for many years and has a heavy influence on todays product design.

If you go, walk round with Dieter Rams’ Ten Principles of good design in mind:

  1. Good design is innovative.
  2. Good design makes a product useful.
  3. Good design is aesthetic.
  4. Good design makes a product understandable.
  5. Good design is unobtrusive.
  6. Good design is honest.
  7. Good design is long-lasting.
  8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
  9. Good design is environmentally friendly.
  10. Good design is as little design as possible.

Principles that can directly translate to designing online and digital products.

Then I came out of the show to the pretty clunky looking Dyson Airblade in the loos, I think they missed points 3, 5, 8 and 10

I’ll be working round the corner from the Design Museum from Monday and with my new annual membership I will be back there, a lot.
